Council contractors monitor and enforce Council’s Dog Control by-law and respond to calls regarding wandering dogs, barking dogs and dangerous dogs.
If you have a concern or complaint about a dog phone us on:
(09) 237 1300 (all hours).
We take all calls seriously.
Menacing or dangerous dog:
The nature of the complaint will impact how Animal Control responds, for this reason it is very important that people ring us with details of the complaint concerning the dog.
The complaint will then be investigated and determined on its own merit. There are a range of responses available to the Animal Control Officers from issuing a warning, a fine (up to $200), or seizing the dog.
Barking dogs:
When we receive a first complaint about barking an Animal Control Officer will visit the dog owner to inform them that there is a barking issue and give educational advice to help stop the barking.
When we receive a second complaint a warning letter is sent to the owner, and a bark monitoring form (to record time, date, and duration of barking) is given to the complainant.
If this form shows evidence of a barking issue then a noise abatement notice is issued to the dog owner and if the barking continues the dog can be seized.
Animal Cruelty:
If you feel that an owner is not providing their dog with proper care and attention, supplying it with sufficient food, water and shelter or not ensuring that the dog is receiving adequate exercise it could be a case of animal cruelty. Please contact Auckland SPCA on 09 2567300.
