The keeping of pigs is covered by Franklin District Council’s Keeping of Animals, Poultry and Bees By-law 2007 and the District Plan.
Keeping Pigs Prohibited in urban areas
The Bylaw prohibits the keeping of pigs in any urban area - residential, business, rural village and coastal village zones.
Keeping Pigs in rural areas
The Bylaw provides that no person may keep any pig on any landholding less than 4000m2, or keep pigs where there is less than 500m2 of land available for each pig, without written permission from Council.
No person may keep any pig in any conditions or in any manner that is, or is likely to be, a nuisance or a threat to public health or safety.
If you would like to have more than 15 pigs you will need to obtain Resource Consent from Council.
If you are unsure about whether you can keep pigs, please give us a call on (09) 237 1300 and ask to speak to the Duty Planner or email us.
Feeding Pigs
If you have pigs and wish to feed them on food scraps, you are only permitted to feed them food scraps from your own property unless you obtain a permit from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
Pigsties and Feeding troughs
The construction, maintenance and setback requirements for pigsties and troughs are covered in the Bylaw.
