Building Consents for Swimming Pools Print

A building consent is required for installing a pool, and in some cases pool fencing.  This is because a swimming pool (see below) is considered building work under the Building Act 2004.

We have another webpage on pool fencing which you should visit -

A pool is defined as any excavation, structure or product containing water over 400mm deep that is used or is capable of being used for swimming, wading, paddling or bathing.  This includes spa and inflatable pools.

Keep your pool empty until it has received a building consent and you have installed fencing.

Inspections

When the building control officer inspects the pool he or she will be looking at the:

  • excavation
  • structural componentary
  • fencing compliance
