Does My Project Require a Building Consent? Print

If you are building a new building, altering or adding to a existing building, demolishing a building, doing some plumbing, drainage, installing a fireplace or air conditioning or ventilation systems you will need a building consent.

Do I need a Building Consent when building a deck?

If your deck is over 1 metre high at any point you need a building consent.

Do I need a Building Consent for a garden shed?

If your shed is over 10 square metres in area or is closer to the boundary or a dwelling than its height, then it needs Building Consent.

Do I need a Building Consent to build a fence?

If your fence is over 2 metres high you will need a Building Consent.

Do I need a Building Consent for building or replacing a septic tank or effluent field?

Yes.

Do I need a Building Consent to build a dam?

If your dam is more than 3 metres high at any point and holds more than 20,000 cubic metres of water, you need a Building Consent.

Do I need a Building Consent to enclose my existing veranda, patio or porch?

If it exceeds 5 square metres you need a Building Consent.

I have a construction that does not have a Building Consent and should. What should I do?

A Building Consent is NOT required for routine maintenance, minor repairs and refurbishment and minor work like retaining walls less than 1.5 metres high (that are not supporting a load) and a fence less than 2 metres high (except a swimming pool fence).
