Franklin District Council is currently creating signs to put up outside Civil Defence Emergency Reporting Centres so that you know where to go in a civil defence emergency. Most of the facilities are community halls or large sports clubs that have the ability to cater for large numbers of people at one time.
These Civil Defence Emergency Reporting Centres are places where people would be directed to go if they have to evacuate their home or work and cannot return. At the centre you would register as having evacuated and receive information on the event and what to do next.
Welfare Centres
For some people staying with friends or family when they have been evacuated is not an option. In this case Council, as the Civil Defence Authority in Franklin, would provide temporary accommodation through Welfare Centres. These are different from the Civil Defence Emergency Reporting Centres and we are hoping to work with those facilities throughout the District which are set up to offer such accommodation, namely marae, education and outdoor adventure camps and some large sports clubs, to formalise where these centres will be.
A list of Civil Defence Emergency Reporting Centres & Welfare Centres will be published here when they are finalised and their status (whether they are open or closed) will be given in an emergency.
If you would like to learn more about Civil Defence we are always happy to speak to your community group. Contact Council on (09) 237 1300 and ask for the Civil Defence Officer to provide more information.
