The New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA) have taken over from the Ministry of Health as being the face for food safety. Franklin District Council Environmental Health Officers work closely with NZFSA to help keep Franklin food safe.
Food Grading System in Franklin
Franklin District Council wants to improve food safety within food premises in our District. To do this our Environmental Health Officers carry out regular inspections of food premises around Franklin and provide a food grading system.
A grading Certificate will be issued to each food premises reflecting the grade allocated by the EHO following an inspection of their premises. The grades allocated will be as follows:
A - Fewer than 5 faults; no critical or repeat faults.
B - Fewer than 10 faults; no critical or repeat faults.
D - More than 10 faults; no critical faults and/or one or more repeat faults.
E - One or more critical faults.
There is no Category C grade as there is no average standard of premises or passing grade. Food premises will either be graded as high quality (A&B) or below quality standards (D&E).
Fault
Fault means a condition or set of conditions which do not comply with the Food Hygiene Regulations 1974, but are not Critical Faults.
Critical Fault
Means a condition or set of conditions that would expose food to contamination or taint, or that would allow food to become dirtied or deteriorated. Critical faults include, but are not limited to:
1 Food risk – incorrect storage temperature, poor food storage, fridge not working, etc
2 No wash hand basin or access to one
3 Evidence of vermin/insects
4 Dishwasher not working
5 Premises unclean and dirty
6 History of previous non-compliance with serious requisition
Food Premises Closure
Where the food premises is in such a condition that may expose that food to contamination, the EHO may require the owner or occupier of that premises to cease using the premises for a period of specified notice.
