Neighbourhood Support Print

Neighbourhood support is a means of keeping crime at bay within your own community by utilising the support of your neighbours.

In practical terms, it is simply the act of neighbours keeping an eye on one another’s properties and noting and reporting suspicious behaviour. Neighbourhood Support is endorsed by the police as a means of keeping down crime, such as burglary and general property theft.

A Neighbourhood Support Group:

  • Encourages neighbours to talk to each other
  • Shares information that will help reduce the risk and fear of crime
  • Helps foster a sense of community spirit, where everyone is respected and valued
  • Educates and empowers neighbours to take responsibility for their own safety
  • Allows neighbours to assist each other and the community
  • Identifies the strengths and skills of neighbours to contribute to solving local problems
  • Minimises burglaries and car crime in the local area
  • Reduces graffiti, vandalism, violence and disorder
  • Supports victims of crime
  • Enhances the safety features and appearance of the neighbourhood
  • Decides on ways to handle any civil emergencies that may occur
  • Knows when and how to contact Police, other emergency services or support agencies
  • Liaises and co-operate with other community groups

How to Establish A Neighbourhood Support Group

It is very simple to become involved in Neighbourhood Support. If you are already aware that there is an active group in your neighbourhood, then approach the co-ordinator and ask to have your name put on the list. If there is no Neighbourhood Support group in your street, simply contact Safer Community Coalition at the Franklin District Council on 09 2371300. You will be provided with the necessary forms. It is then a matter of deciding on a time, date and place for a meeting (best to keep meeting sizes to a maximum of 20 households). A quick mail drop will be all that is needed from you.

For all enquiries please contact either Safer Community Coalition on 2371300 or Cherie McLean 09 237 1700
