Water Meter reading

Pukekohe: Continual Basis
Waiuku: January, February, July & August.
Tuakau: April & October.
Other schemes: March & September.

Current Water Charge

Water is charged throughout Franklin at $1.95 per m3 up to 200m3 every six months.

Every cubic metre over 200m3 is charged at $2.44 per m3.

How to tell if you're saving water

Monitor your water usage by recording your meter reading at the same time every week. Subtract the previous reading from it, and the difference is your water usage for the week.

An average family of four use more than 800 litres per day. By using the Handy Hints, you could reduce this to around 600 litres per day.

By saving water, you're also saving money. If you use over 200 cubic metres of water within your six monthly billing, you incur a 25 percent surcharge.

Waterways (creeks and streams)

Property owners are required to maintain any watercourses on their property, to keep them clean and free of weed or debris, so that water will flow freely.

Wastewater

Sewerage

Sewerage reticulation schemes operate in Waiuku, Tuakau, Pukekohe, Clarks Beach, Glenbrook Beach, Patumahoe, Buckland and Kingseat. To help them operate efficiently residents are asked to ensure stormwater is not discharged into the system and that no solid objects or chemicals are put down toilets.

Septic Tanks

Septic tanks are the responsibility of individual property owners and they must meet environmental health standards set by Council. They should be pumped out every three to five years and the effluent line should be kept free of any obstruction at all times.

Water payments

All water supplied by Franklin District Council is metered and charged. Meters are read every six months and the accounts are sent out shortly afterwards.

Council provides special readings at a charge when properties change ownership or occupancy.

Check for leaks!

Read your water meter last thing at night after everyone in your house has finished using water.
Note down all the figures.
Check it again first thing in the morning before anyone has used water.

If there is a difference in the reading, there may be a leak. If so, ring a plumber. A leak may go undetected for months, wasting precious water, and your money. If you have a leak, you may get a nasty surprise on your 6 monthly water bill! Make sure you know where your water meter is (usually near the front of a property) and check it regularly.
