Franklin District Council’s Environmental Health Officers inspect and issue licences to certain business premises to ensure the health and wellbeing of our district.
Under the Health Act 1956, and supported by Council bylaws, officers inspect and issue licences to the following:
Hairdressers
Food premises (also covered under Council’s Food Hygiene Bylaw 2004) which includes the issuing of food grades. Learn more about food grades.
Funeral Parlours
Offensive Trades (for example fish cleaning, rubbish collecting, stock yards)
Camping Grounds
Hawkers and mobile or travelling shops (also covered under Council’s Mobile or Travelling Shops and Hawkers & Itinerant Traders Bylaw 1972

Those businesses that need a health license must register annually and will be inspected at least one a year. If you take over a business with an existing license we still need to know so please contact us.
