Throughout the Franklin community, groups and individuals volunteer in a variety of ways to help keep Franklin safe and beautiful. They all do a wonderful job and we greatly value their efforts - from the big organised events with lots of volunteers through to the individuals who have adopted areas and paint out graffiti or pick up rubbish. You too can get involved! You could start your own care group or become involved in one of the many existing ones. This page should help give you an idea!
Neighbourhood Support
Do you ever wonder if there is a way that you can avoid becoming another burglary statistic? Have you belonged to, or wish to become part of the Neighbourhood Support network?
Franklin District has its own Neighbourhood Support coordinator, based at the Franklin District Council offices. Statistics show that strong Neighbourhood Support networks have dramatically reduced incidences of burglary and vehicle crime. If you would like to know more, you can either phone Franklin Safer Community Council on 2371304 extn 418 or your local police station.
Community Patrols
Do you, as a caring member of the community, have the odd few hours that you could spare helping to keep petty crime at bay?
If you do, then consider joining your local community patrol. Franklin has three community patrols: The Pukekohe Community Patrol, the Tuakau Community Patrol and the Waiuku Night Owls. These patrols are made up of members of our community who act as ‘eyes and ears’ for the police, logging down suspicious activity and helping to reduce the opportunity for offenders to commit crime.
For more information, phone Franklin Safer Community Council on 2371304 extn 418 or phone the Community Constable on 2371722.
Beachcare Groups - Karioitahi and Port Waikato
BeachCare Groups are an invaluable part of our coastal communities, undertaking revegetation of dune areas with native sand binding grasses, work that is very important for preserving the balance between natural shoreline processes and human activity/recreation.
The BeachCare Groups also assist Council with the management of these areas, for example fencing to keep out motorbikes.
If you love the beach and want to be part of protecting it then joining Beach Care could be for you. Contact our Parks Officer at Franklin District Council on 237 1388.
Want to See Your Art on Every Corner?
Franklin District Council and Franklin Safer Community Council are looking for artists interested in taking their art to the street and painting a Counties Power Transformer.
If you are a keen artist who would like to try your hand at a different sort of canvas call Franklin Safer Community Council on 237 1304 extn 418.
Keep New Zealand Beautiful Groups
Keep New Zealand Beautiful Groups operate throughout the District. They work with Council and local schools on rubbish clean up projects (such as Clean Up New Zealand Week), are involved in tree planting on reserves (such as the Totara lined walkway for the Franklin Pioneers Trail on Cape Hill) and maintain garden areas like at the Pukekohe Railway Station. If this sounds like you contact our Parks Officer at Franklin District Council on 237 1388.
Cobourne Reserve Gardens in Port Waikato
Residents volunteer to maintain the beautiful Cobourne Reserve Gardens in Port Waikato. What you see when you visit is all the result of volunteer work.
These are diverse gardens ranging from a natural native garden walk to perennial boarders and neatly clipped hedges and they overlook a beautiful spot on the river. This reserve is used by many picnickers and is a favourite spot for wedding photos.
If this is a place you would like to volunteer contact our Parks Officer at Franklin District Council on 237 1388.
