Have Fun But Be Safe This Guy Fawkes Print

3 November 2009

With weather forecasts promising a fine weekend, Guy Fawkes celebrations are likely to be held throughout the district.

Franklin District Council Principal Rural Fire Officer Andy Baker is urging people to make sure they take extreme care when lighting bonfires and setting off fire works.

Lighting fires in areas zoned residential or commercial is not permitted. In rural areas with the current open fire season in place, fires are currently allowed. However, the landowner is responsible to ensure any fire is safe, does not contain materials such as tyres, treated timber or other synthetic products and that there is no risk of it spreading.

Mr Baker says, “Basically it comes down to courtesy and common sense. You should think of safety first and give consideration to your neighbours when planning a celebration involving bonfires or fireworks. Discuss with your neighbours what is planned, how it might affect them or their animals and how you can manage any adverse effects.”

“If you live next to someone who has livestock, you should talk to them about how you can work together to reduce the likelihood of any potential issues or stress. At the end of the day, people need to adopt a sensible and responsible attitude.”

“This weekend is usually the busiest weekend in the year for fire fighters and keeping in mind that all fire fighters in the Franklin District are volunteers, it would be nice for them not be called out continuously because of others stupidity. Have fun celebrating Guy Fawkes, but please keep your celebrations safe.”
