The new year will see a new look for part of Waiuku’s CBD. Stage two of the Waiuku Town Centre redevelopment will begin on 11 January.
The $2m project includes the redevelopment of lower Queen and Bowen Streets and creating a town square around the clock tower.
Franklin District Council GM Works and Services Barry Bergin says, “To create the town square, one side of the road will be blocked to traffic permanently and turned into an attractive public space for the public to enjoy.”
“The project will create a clean, fresh, user-friendly CBD, while also retaining the unique historical elements of Waiuku.”
The work will involve replacing the existing paving to match that of the paving from the $2m Stage One redevelopment, completed earlier in the year. Landscaping, kerb and channel work, street and amenity lighting, street furniture, storm water, electrical works and reconstruction of part of Queen Street are also included in the scope of works, while the clock tower will also get a face lift.
The start of the project has been timed to coincide with the quieter holiday period to create the least disruption possible to retailers and the public, while missing the busy Christmas period. Work on the project is expected to be completed by mid August.
John Fillmore Contracting has been contracted to complete the work.
