Franklin District Council has a Mayor elected by the District at large and represents the whole of Franklin. There are also 12 Councillors.
Councillors are elected by wards and represent the interests of that ward. However, they have an overarching responsibility to make decisions which will promote the wellbeing of the whole community.
3 Councillors represent each of the four wards:
- Waiuku-Awhitu Ward
- Northern Ward
- Southern Ward
- Pukekohe Ward
The role of the Mayor is not set out in law but traditionally the Mayor has represented Council at public functions and events, and provides leadership to elected members and the District. When the Mayor is away or unable to attend to his or her functions, the Deputy Mayor takes over those functions.
