We realise that if you live somewhere else in New Zealand, or even overseas, contemplating moving to Franklin requires more than just a great job to come to. You may want to know what the district is like, what we do for fun or how your family will fit in. We are happy to talk to you about these further, but for a preview of our district please read our frequently asked questions and answers below.
How big are Pukekohe and Franklin?
The township population of Pukekohe is approx. 19,000 people. Pukekohe is Franklin’s main town along with Waiuku (population approx 5,500) and Tuakau (population approx 3000). Latest population figures show Franklin with a population of approx 59,000 and growing. Staff live throughout the district and some travel in from Auckland and Hamilton.
What sort of lifestyle is it?
Franklin is still primarily rural and we are proud of our country feel. Saying this, Pukekohe has two major supermarkets, some ‘big box’ shopping and a lively main street with many restaurants and cafes. You are only approximately 30 minutes from Manukau City Centre where there are movie theatres, a big shopping mall, theme park and most common New Zealand brand name stores you can think of. You are also only 50 minutes from downtown Auckland and approximately an hour from Hamilton.
There are lots of recreational options in Franklin. Pukekohe has a Council owned recreation centre with a gym and indoor heated swimming pool along with outdoor pools around the district. We have beautiful coast on both sides including the black sand beach of Karioitahi, and the beaches of Port Waikato and the Awhitu Peninsula. We are also well known for motor sports and horse racing.
What is Franklin District Council like?
We have approximately 148 staff members who work in our Pukekohe office which is only a 5 minute walk from the main street. A few customer service staff members also work in our Waiuku and Tuakau service centres. We have an active social club and often organise social events both in the office and outside.
